Hafiz Hashim: 2003 All England Champion Who Ended Malaysia’s 37-Year Wait

In the honour roll of Malaysian badminton, Muhammad Hafiz Hashim wrote a vivid chapter. In 2003 the young man from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, defeated China’s Chen Hong in the men’s singles final of the All England Open in Birmingham, ending Malaysia’s 37-year wait for an All England singles title and stunning the badminton world. For a country that treats badminton as its national sport, the trophy’s weight was immense.

Hafiz’s run to the All England crown

He went all the way as an unseeded player, beating the strong Chen Hong 17–14, 15–10 in the final. That made him the first Malaysian All England men’s singles champion since Tan Aik Huang in 1966, and the first unseeded winner in 15 years. In an era ruled by China, Indonesia and Denmark, a young Malaysian breaking through at the sport’s most traditional event was a classic underdog story. After the title his world ranking climbed to No. 5.

A badminton family and Misbun’s tutelage

Hafiz came from a badminton family — his brother Roslin Hashim was also a national team mainstay who reached the world’s top ranks. He trained early under master coach Misbun Sidek, eldest of the famous Sidek brothers and a former national singles head coach. Under that disciplined, technical guidance he honed delicate net play and varied attacks that laid the foundation for his breakthrough.

Beyond All England — honours and coaching

Besides the All England trophy, he won men’s singles gold at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and represented Malaysia many times at the Thomas Cup and Sudirman Cup. Though he never scaled the same peak again, his steady play kept him a key squad member until around 2016. After retiring he turned to coaching, working overseas and even guiding India’s P. V. Sindhu, passing Malaysia’s badminton experience to the world.

An All England bloodline carried forward

From Tan Aik Huang to Hafiz, the All England men’s singles crown strung together generations of Malaysian dreams; Lee Chong Wei later won it several times, and in 2021 Lee Zii Jia lifted it again, keeping the lineage alive. That trophy rewarded talent and hard work — and lit the badminton fire in countless Malaysian youngsters.
