1992 Thomas Cup: Malaysian Badminton’s Last Glory

For Malaysian badminton fans, the 1992 Thomas Cup is an unforgettable collective memory. That year Malaysia’s men beat arch-rivals Indonesia 3–2 at home in Stadium Negara, Kuala Lumpur, to lift the symbol of men’s team supremacy again after 25 years — and it remains the Malaysian team’s most recent Thomas Cup title.
The final: a 3–2 thriller over Indonesia
The final on 16 May 1992 was nerve-shredding. First singles Rashid Sidek beat Indonesia’s Ardy Wiranata 15–11, 10–15, 15–4 to steady the ship; second singles Foo Kok Keong then swept future Olympic champion Alan Budikusuma 15–6, 15–2 to put Malaysia back ahead; and finally the doubles of Cheah Soon Kit and Soo Beng Kiang clinched the decisive point 15–12, 10–15, 15–8, detonating a deafening roar.
A 25-year wait and a golden squad
It was Malaysia’s fifth title and ended a quarter-century wait. Beyond Rashid Sidek, Foo Kok Keong, Cheah Soon Kit and Soo Beng Kiang, the squad of nine included Kwan Yoke Meng, Rahman Sidek and Wong Ewe Mun — a golden generation. Holding their nerve under intense home pressure, they had the last laugh against Indonesia, and their names are still recalled by fans today.
A peak hard to repeat
Since 1992, Malaysia’s men have challenged for this team title many times without reaching the top again, making that night ever more precious. It is not just a trophy but proof that Malaysian badminton truly stood at the world summit, a yardstick that still inspires successors.
A badminton-mad nation’s shared memory
For a country that treats badminton as its national game, the 1992 win meant far more than a match. Malaysia had won in 1949, 1952, 1955 and 1967; the 1992 title was the team’s fifth and a morale boost after a long trough. On final night, countless families watched on TV and streets erupted — a nationwide celebration that became a generation’s most vivid shared memory of sport and national pride.
