Germany opened their 2026 World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, hammering tournament debutants Curaçao 7-1 at NRG Stadium in Houston. Julian Nagelsmann’s side were relentless from the first whistle, and the seven-goal haul carried historic weight: it lifted the four-time world champions past Brazil to become the all-time leading scorers in World Cup history. For a team that arrived under pressure to prove its credentials, this was the statement of intent the supporters had been craving.

Germany strike early and never look back

The rout was set in motion inside six minutes. Felix Nmecha exchanged a slick one-two with Florian Wirtz before curling a low finish into the bottom corner. Curaçao briefly stunned the favourites when Livano Comenencia pulled one back in the 21st minute, but the response was ruthless. Nico Schlotterbeck powered home in the 38th minute, and Kai Havertz converted a penalty deep in first-half stoppage time to make it 3-1 at the break. Any hopes of a Curaçao revival were extinguished within two minutes of the restart.

Havertz, Musiala and the substitutes pile on the misery

Jamal Musiala made it 4-1 in the 47th minute, sweeping in after sustained pressure. Nathaniel Brown added a fifth on 68 minutes, before Deniz Undav came off the bench to score in the 78th minute. Havertz completed his brace in the 88th minute to round off a chastening evening for the debutants. With 64.6% possession, 26 shots and 12 on target, Nagelsmann’s attack overwhelmed an overmatched defence, while Manuel Neuer was barely tested beyond Comenencia’s consolation.

A historic night and a warning to the field

Beyond the scoreline, the occasion will be remembered for the record it produced. Germany’s seven goals pushed their cumulative World Cup tally beyond Brazil’s, a milestone that underlines the nation’s enduring pedigree on the biggest stage. Curaçao, the smallest territory ever to reach a World Cup, can hold their heads high for their goal but were always likely to be tested by elite opposition.

What the result means for Group E

The emphatic win hands Nagelsmann’s men an early advantage in goal difference, a factor that can prove decisive in a tight group. Confidence, rhythm and ruthlessness in front of goal are exactly what a contender needs heading into the tougher fixtures ahead. Curaçao, by contrast, must regroup quickly and tighten up defensively if they are to compete in their remaining matches.
