Shalin Zulkifli: Malaysia’s World-Class Bowling Legend

In Malaysia’s non-mainstream sporting map, Shalin Zulkifli turned bowling into a world-class national calling card. Born in 1978, she took up the sport at nine, joined the national team in the late 1980s and competed for nearly three decades, winning dozens of international medals before formally retiring in early 2021 — one of Malaysian sport’s most enduring icons. Her name is almost synonymous with Malaysian bowling’s glory.

The road to world champion

A multiple-time world champion, she also holds multiple Asian Games golds and Asian Championship titles. In 2001 she won the World Tenpin Masters in England, becoming the event’s first-ever women’s champion; in 2017 she anchored Malaysia to gold over Singapore at the World Championships, showing remarkable longevity and consistency. From rookie to veteran, she stood among the world’s best throughout.

Dominance on the Southeast Asian stage

At the SEA Games she long held the status of one of bowling’s most successful athletes, leading the field in gold medals. Such dominance across many editions and over a decade is rare in any sport, making her an undisputed benchmark for generation after generation of bowlers. At big meets, her name was often a byword for a medal, carrying a nation’s expectations.

Hall of Fame and historic standing

In 2004 she was inducted into the International Bowling Hall of Fame, cementing her lofty place in world bowling history. As early as 1997 she became the first woman to bowl a perfect 300 at the Bowling World Cup, a widely celebrated breakthrough; in 2002 she was named International Bowler of the Year. After retiring she stayed active in promoting the sport and developing young players.

A champion of bowling culture and women’s sport

Her brilliance reflects bowling’s broad grassroots base in Malaysia, from mall alleys to school and corporate leagues. As a woman long at the world summit, she broke prejudices about women’s competitive sport and inspired generations of girls to take up the ball and turn passion into a career — a demonstration no less valuable than her medals.
