When football talks about pure goalscorers, Gerd Müller is impossible to leave out. Nicknamed “Der Bomber,” the West German striker was famous for his lethal instinct inside the box, burying one decisive goal after another and writing himself into the history of both the World Cup and Bayern Munich.

The Outline of “Der Bomber”

Müller was born on 3 November 1945 in Nördlingen, Germany, and died on 15 August 2021 at the age of 75. He was neither tall nor physically imposing, yet his explosive burst, poacher’s positioning and quick turn-and-shoot finishing made him the most feared finisher of his era. He devoted almost his entire prime to Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich’s Goal Machine

Across roughly 15 years at Bayern, Müller scored 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga appearances, a league tally that has long ranked among the highest in Bundesliga history. In 1971-72 he scored 40 goals in a single season, a Bundesliga record that stood until 2021, when Robert Lewandowski broke it with 41 in 2020-21. He also helped Bayern win three consecutive European Cups (1974-1976) along with multiple Bundesliga and German Cup titles.

1970 and 1974: World Cup Glory

For West Germany, Müller scored 68 goals in 62 games, an astonishing strike rate. At the 1970 World Cup he netted ten goals to win the Golden Boot as top scorer; in the 1974 final on home soil he scored the winning goal as West Germany beat Johan Cruyff’s Netherlands 2-1. His career World Cup total of 14 goals stood as the record for 32 years, until it was surpassed in 2006.

Legacy and Style

In 1970 Müller won the Ballon d’Or; at Euro 1972 he was top scorer with four goals, including two in the final, and lifted the trophy with West Germany. As one of the very few players to win the World Cup, the European Cup and the Ballon d’Or, Müller became the archetype of the “penalty-box king”: never flashy, simply the most efficient way to put the ball in the net.
