Curacao 0-2 Ivory Coast: Pepe Brace Sends Elephants Into Maiden World Cup Knockout Stage

On a commanding evening in Philadelphia, Ivory Coast eased past Curacao 2-0 thanks to a Nicolas Pepe brace, booking a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage for the first time in their history. For tournament debutants Curacao, the defeat brought a spirited but ultimately winless campaign to a close.

First half: Pepe strikes early

Emerse Fae’s side needed only a point to secure a top-two finish in Group E, but they wasted no time chasing all three. In the 7th minute, Yan Diomande worked space on the right and cut the ball back for the onrushing Pepe, who slotted his finish into the bottom corner to open the scoring.

The early goal set the tone. The Elephants controlled possession and tempo, pressing Curacao high and rarely allowing the debutants to settle. Curacao went into the interval chasing the game, a goal down and short of clear chances.

Second half: Sangare turns provider

Curacao pushed forward after the break in search of an equaliser, but it was Ivory Coast who delivered the decisive blow. In the 64th minute, Ibrahim Sangare threaded a pass through to Pepe, who opened up his body and fired a composed finish past goalkeeper Eloy Room for his second of the night and a 2-0 lead that effectively settled the contest.

Key performers and what it means

The headline belonged firmly to Nicolas Pepe. The former Arsenal forward produced two clinical finishes to carry his country over the line almost single-handedly. Sangare pulled the strings in midfield and supplied the second assist, while Diomande’s creativity sparked the opener.

The win confirmed Ivory Coast as Group E runners-up and sent them into the knockout phase for the first time ever, with a fresh test awaiting in the next round. Curacao, one of the great stories of the group stage, bow out bottom of the group after a debut they can still be proud of.
